Password Manager System
In order to protect the University’s sensitive data and information, it is important that we have strong password requirements in place. Passwords are the front line of protection for user accounts and information. Therefore, a password standard is now in effect for all faculty and staff. This password standard will require use of a strong password and will enforce established password expiration rules per internal audit requirements.
PW Manager provides the capability to automatically set a single strong password for various University systems using your
NinerNET account credentials (Novell, Outlook, 49er Express, and INB using a web-based interface) that is accessible from the University network and the Internet. Users are required to setup a series of security questions and answers that can be used with the self service password reset feature in case they forget their password. PW Manager is located at the web address https://pwmanager.uncc.edu.
Steps:
1. Go to PW Manager.
2. Log in to PW Manager with your NinerNET username and password.
3. Create Security answers.
4. From the main menu, select Change Password and follow the instructions on the screen.
5. Log out of PW Manager.
Note: The password you create using PW Manager will be used to log in to applications using your NinerNET account (click here to see a list).

Once you start using PW Manager you will be notified by email when your password is about to expire. The messages will be delivered 15 days prior to the expiration time and will be repeated at the following intervals -- 15, 10, 8, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 days -- or until the password has been changed.
The password requirements are listed on PW Manager and encourage use of a strong password.
PW Manager Password Rules:
Minimum length: 8 characters
Maximum length: 16 characters
Must include at least one lower case and one upper case alphabetic character
Must include at least one numeric character
Must include at least one special character from this set: ! * + - / : _
In addition to the password rules listed above, the new standard will also enforce these properties:
New passwords cannot be the same as any of the previous 8 passwords
Passwords will automatically expire every 90 days. You will receive email notifications when your password is nearing expiration.
When a user’s password is changed, the user will be notified by an email message. If you receive such a message and did not change the password for your account, you should notify the Help Center immediately. To prevent brute force attacks on the system, users will be locked out of PWManager for 15 minutes after three failed login attempts.
If you have any questions about PW Manager, please contact the Help Center at ext. 73100.
